Technical Details
Side Wall Deflection
When the snake's head collides with a side wall, its movement direction is automatically redirected toward left or right.
Vertical Wall Inversion
When the snake's head is struck by a descending wall segment, the snake's head and tail positions are swapped, effectively reversing the snake's orientation.
Safe Inversion State
No damage is applied during a vertical wall inversion if the snake's head and tail occupy the same row at the time of collision.
Body Compression
Individual body segments that collide with descending walls are pushed downward alongside the wall's movement.
Shield Accumulation
The snake gains one shield for every 20 consecutive seconds spent without taking damage. The timer resets upon any hit. Shields stack cumulatively, with a maximum of 6 shields that can be held at any given moment. Shields are consumed automatically to block incoming damage when a collision would otherwise occur.
Anti-Stall Recovery
If the snake remains unable to move for four consecutive ticks, it is automatically relocated to the center of the corridor to prevent soft-lock situations or instant death.
Direct Collection Requirement
Consumables can only be collected through direct contact with the snake's head. Any consumable touched by another body segment is removed without activating its effect.
Asynchronous Simulation
The snake advances once every tick, while walls and consumables descend once every two ticks.
About
Aspull was developed as a submission for the 2026 Game Programming course. The project explores alternative interpretations of the Snake genre.
As an experimental project, certain mechanics may continue to evolve and occasional bugs may still be present.
